What Makes a Good Kids Tablet?

Technology is a powerful tool and can open the door to many opportunities. It has become an almost inseparable part of all of our lives. Children, especially, are exposed to new and wondrous forms of technology every day. This exposure has probably led many of your children to ask you for a tablet or phone of their own. This is a big decision for any parent to make and something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is a question we get asked a lot and thought it would be a perfect topic to dive into.

So What Makes a Good Kids Tablet?

  1. Parental controls:

This is the most important part of any internet capable tablet geared towards children. The internet is huge and home to some content that might not be suitable to your children. Because of this, any suitable Children’s tablet needs to have a solid layer of protection built in to the operating system. Most Children’s Tablet’s offer a dedicated environment for children to use, only granting them access to specific, parent approved and child friendly features. This parentally controlled operating system grants parents the peace of mind they deserve while letting their little one play on their tablet.

A majority of these protective and controlled environments allow parents to choose which websites their children are allowed to visit and set time limits on how long the tablet can be used at any given time.

  1. Protective Casing:

This one seems like a no brainer, and is another one of the most important features for any Kid’s Tablet to have. Most children are inherently rambunctious and like to play. Depending on the age of your child you may even go as far as to say that your child is clumsy. It’s because of this that we recommend that any tablet geared toward children should have a protective case, keeping it safe from any damage caused by the occasional accidental spill or fall.

A good child proof case for a tablet usually includes a rubberized bumper around the edges to help absorb any impact from accidental drops or bumps. Another good feature for a kid’s tablet’s case to have would be a built in kickstand. This feature allows your child to stand the tablet up (usually horizontally) and enjoy their favorite game or programing without having to constantly hold the device.

  1. A Fun and Child Friendly Design:

This one is less of a necessity and more of a recommendation. Imagination is important to a child’s development. In fact The American Academy of Pediatrics states that “Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles, sometimes in conjunction with other children or adult caregivers.” (Hurwitz SC. To be successful: let them play! Child Educ.2002/2003;79 :101– 102)( https://bit.ly/39SHweT)

A kid’s friendly tablet should encourage this kind of imaginative play by offering a fun and lively design that your child can enjoy.
